Fireplace or Wood-Burning Stove? Don’t Forget Your Annual Chimney Sweep

Public safety reminder to have fireplace and wood-burning stove flues swept at least every twelve months in France.

As the cooler months arrive, fireplaces and wood-burning stoves come back into use across the South of France. Before lighting the first fire of the season, it is important to check when the flue was last professionally swept.

In France, this is not simply a recommendation. Smoke flues and connecting pipes must normally be swept at least once every twelve months. Local regulations may require more frequent sweeping, including during the heating season.

This requirement applies to traditional fireplaces as well as wood-burning stoves. If an appliance has remained completely unused for twelve months or more, sweeping is not required during that period—but it must be completed before the appliance is used again.

Regular sweeping removes soot and deposits that can obstruct the flue. It helps reduce the risk of chimney fires and dangerous fumes, while ensuring that the fireplace or stove can operate correctly.

The work should be carried out by a properly qualified professional. Keep the certificate issued after the visit, as it provides a useful record for your insurer and when selling or renting the property.

If you own a second home, it is particularly easy for this routine task to be overlooked. A timely appointment now means the property will be ready whenever you, your family or your guests next want to enjoy the fire.

For the official requirements, see Article R1331-71 of the French Public Health Code:
